0:54Stage Flip Switch Adjustment
If you're having a hard time with stage flipping, you can try adjusting the leaf switches of the flipper buttons. A good guideline is that the lower flipper should trigger at about one third of the flipper button's stroke length, and the upper flipper at about two thirds. To adjust these, only bend the second and fourth leaf switch. Make sure to bend the switches only at their base, not in the middle or top part, to avoid damaging them. For proper adjustment, use a dedicated leaf switch adjuster tool or a small screwdriver. If the gap of your tool is too narrow, you can carefully widen it with a small screwdriver. A significant improvement in my slap saves and Shatzes came from learning that you can push the machine to the side before slapping or pressing the button. The technique is somewhat tricky, and the timing depends not only on the situation but also on the machine itself, its feet and the floor. Nonetheless, mastering this technique is well worth the effort. Here are a few examples of Keith Elwin at the Stern Pro Circuit. Note that those saves were made in a single game! 2:26King Kong Drills
Here's a nice drill to help you stay in control during a right inlane feed on King Kong, which can be challenging. If the ball comes down slow enough, you can practice your rolling backhands into the Cave and Gong shot. However, if the ball is too fast to stop it on the flipper, you can get into trouble. That's when the Shatz practice comes into play to save the ball. The goal is to shoot the Cave or Gong over and over again. You can also practice your loop passes on King Kong shooting the left or right orbit, give it a try!
